1925 School Anniversary Exhibition
"A Survey of British Straits Settlements in Nanyang" was written by Song Yunpu and published in 1930. During the 1920s, the author traveled to Nanyang (Southeast Asia) to conduct field research, drawing extensively from a wealth of literature and historical records to compile this volume. The book provides meticulous accounts of the local customs, history, geography, education and religious beliefs of Singapore, Penang and Malacca. While conducting his research in Malacca, the author visited Pay Fong, which happened to be celebrating its 12th anniversary at the time (1925). In his writings, he made special mention of a model titled "The Utopia", meticulously crafted by student Shen Mu Zhou and his peers, which left a lasting impression on him. Guided by these historical accounts, the History Gallery specially commissioned Pay Fong's art teacher to recreate, reimagine and re-interpret the artwork, bridging a century-long dialogue with the original masterpiece.
